Travel Diary

Travelling through Karnataka & Andhra - A lot of cotton cultivation though mustard is a distant second. Interesting article on child labour in Cotton seed production http://germanwatch.org/tw/bay-stug.pdf

Today is Bogi festival. My train arrived at 3 45 half an hour before scheduled time. Mala was at station to pick me up. A smooth ride all through. Wonder what makes Mumbai roads so bad. May be being a mega city, people feel that they have no stake in well being of the city. Everyone knows that BMC and contractors are eating money. The metro work that started after Mumbai's is nearing completion. Only 2hr power cut in Madras. I will know how bad it is in the interior tomorrow. The whole city is deserted though it is a sunday-- everyone is cleaning up for Pongal tomorrow. Early morning I saw in about 4-5 places, they were burning junk to observe Bogi. Earlier they used to burn tyres etc. Now with various restrictions and also with the spread of Flats as residences, that has come to an end.

I saw solar panel installation in my sister's place. The needs are met directly from the solar energy during the day.

26/1  Some interesting observation on khap panchayat like institution in TN, called kattu panchayat. Am curious about such an institution prevalent in north and south India.
